Quick answer
The best practical accounting course for a beginner teaches real tasks such as invoices, reconciliations, VAT and month-end, on software UK employers use, and explains its job support in writing. Compare the syllabus, teaching style, certificate and support terms, not just the price or the star rating.
What a good course should teach
- Double-entry bookkeeping and the trial balance
- Sales and purchase invoices
- Bank reconciliations
- VAT returns and Making Tax Digital
- Accruals, prepayments and month-end journals
- Excel for accounting work
Which software matters
Xero, Sage 50 and QuickBooks are the names you'll see most in UK small business and accounts roles. Check that a course lets you practise on the software yourself, and doesn't just demonstrate it. Check the syllabus too, because not every course covers all three.
How to compare courses
| Compare | What good looks like |
|---|---|
| Syllabus | A published list of topics and software |
| Teaching | Live tutors who can answer questions, with recordings if you miss a class |
| Practice | Realistic client files, not only videos |
| Certificate | A clear statement of whether it is CPD, AAT or another qualification |
| Job support | A written list of what is included and how long it lasts |
| Reviews | Independent reviews, with recent ones from your course |
| Terms | Cancellation and refund rights you can read before you pay |
Practical training or AAT first?
Practical training helps you get job-ready, and AAT gives you a recognised qualification. For most beginners, the best route is both: start with practical training, get an entry-level role, then study AAT alongside it. Practical training alone won't make you a qualified accountant. Our guide to AAT and practical training explains the difference.
If you're applying from outside the UK
A course does not give you the right to work in the UK. Employers must check your right to work, so confirm your position before you plan your job search.

Career Axis wrote this guide, and we sell practical accounting training. We offer live online training on real client data, CPD certification, employer introductions and recruitment support. Our main Live plan includes 6 months of recruitment support and an experience reference. Our best performers may be offered a 2–3 month internship at an affiliated firm, but we don't guarantee an internship or a job. We confirm fees during a free consultation, so ask for the full price and the terms before you decide.
What practical work should look like
Practical training should feel like the work itself. You should post invoices, reconcile a bank account, prepare a VAT return and work through month-end tasks. Watching someone else do them isn't enough.
Ask to see an example task or module list. A good provider should be able to explain what you'll practise and how your work will be reviewed.
Questions to ask a provider
- Who teaches the course, and are they working in accounting?
- Can I ask questions during class?
- Are sessions recorded?
- Which software will I use myself?
- What certificate will I receive?
- How long does recruitment support last?
- What are the cancellation terms?
Think about the total cost
The course fee is only part of the picture. If you also plan to study AAT, remember that it has its own registration and assessment costs. AAT lists a standard qualification fee of £460 for Level 2, on top of training provider fees that it says usually range from £600 to £2,000.
Ask each provider what is included, whether exam fees are extra, and whether you can pay in instalments.
Who practical training suits
- Career changers who need software skills
- Graduates without practical experience
- People who have studied accounting overseas and need UK software experience
- Returners who want to refresh their skills
- AAT students who want hands-on practice
